August 8, 1988 was the first night game at Wrigley Field almost sixty years after night games first came to professional baseball on May 2, 1930. Night games first came to the Minor Leagues during the Great Depression. Teams saw a rise in attendance from an average of six hundred fans to an average of twelve thousand a game.

It took the major leagues five years to catch up with the first night game being played between Cincinnati and Philadelphia on May 24, 1935. Fifty plus years later Wrigley Field was the last Major League ballpark to add lights.
