On April 26 1986, the largest nuclear accident that the world has ever seen, occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The plant was located in northern Ukraine which was part of the USSR then. This event which is still an issue today, caused the world to rethink it's growing dependence on nuclear power. Soviet officials were slow to respond, or even warn Europe that a radioactive cloud was moving their way. Once a full scale effort to contain the smoldering reactor was underway, the world started to realize the extent of the danger. Many workers died, or became permanently ill, from working to contain and cap the damaged reactor. The power plant was not prepared for a nuclear incident, and did not even have adequate protective gear for the workers. Although the damaged reactor has been capped, it is not a permanent solution and will have to be dealt with again. This disaster was a result of mistakes made, when conducting a normally scheduled test on the reactors. The area where the power plant is located was abandoned, and is still considered unsafe for human life.
