The College Football Hall of Fame has finally found its home in Atlanta, Georgia, near Olympic Park and the CNN headquarters.

The Hall of Fame was started by the National Football Foundation (NFF) in 1951, but it was on paper only. There was no building or museum to put the achievements of the enshrined on display.

In 1967, the original plan was to build a museum on the Rutgers campus in New Brunswick, N.J. because Rutgers was the site of the first ever college football game in 1869 against what is now Princeton University. However, after years of collecting donations, and an inquiry by the N.J. attorney general, nothing was built. It was similar situation in New York. The NFF, after an investigation of the donations in N.Y., moved the operation to Kings Mills, Ohio where a building was finally built on Kings Island in 1978.

The Hall stayed there until financial woes forced it to move to South Bend, IN., near the Notre Dame University campus, in 1995. The Hall stayed there until poor attendance forced its move to Atlanta in 2009. The $68.5 million museum opened in 2014 and is near Georgia Tech University.

The facility is 94,256 square feet (8,756.7 m2) and contains approximately 50,000 square feet (4,600 m2) of exhibit and event space, interactive displays and a 45-yard indoor football field.

Atlanta Hall Management operates the College Football Hall of Fame.

As of 2017, there are 987 players and 214 coaches enshrined representing 306 schools.
