This is Mirny Diamond Mine located in Mirny, the Siberian region of Eastern Russia.

It started operation in 1957.

The mine is 525 meters deep (1722.44 feet), making it the 4th-deepest hole in the world, and has a diameter of 1,200 m (3,900 ft).

It is the second largest excavated hole in the world, after Bingham Canyon Mine.

Open-pit mining was discontinued in 2004. Since 2009, it has been active as an underground diamond mine. The mining continues beneath this hulking structure through dozens of tunnels and gives approximately 4,409 pounds of diamond per year.

The expected value of Mirny Diamond Mine is £13 billion. The worth is based on adding the total value of the diamonds it has already produced to remaining reserve.

The owner of the mine is Alrosa, a joint-stock company. It was set up in accordance with the Presidential Decree N 158C of the President of Russia in 1992 and took over Yakutalmaz, a former USSR state-owned diamond mining company.

Helicopters cannot pass above it because of incidents in which they were sucked in by the downward air flow.
