King George VI of England died on February 6, 1952. How his daughter, Elizabeth, found out she was ascending to the throne was a tale.

The 25-year-old Princess had left England Jan. 31 on an International Tour that included Australia and New Zealand because the King, who battled cancer, was too weak to travel.

Elizabeth, and her husband Prince Phillip, had taken a respite from the tour by stopping in Kenya. Elizabeth was an avid photographer and wanted to photograph the various wildlife. The couple stayed in the famous Treetops Resort - a hotel high on stilts in the trees.

On Feb. 6, Elizabeth was hiking far away from any kind of communication. In the meantime, the King passed away in his sleep. The code name "Hyde Park Corner" was used. Winston Churchill was told and the wheels starting turning to find and inform Elizabeth, while alerting the populace.

Four hours after the King's death, Elizabeth was told, partially because a journalist, Granville Roberts, had been told by his editors of the King's death and he had been traveling with the Princess. Roberts told Phillip's private secretary, who told the Prince. When Elizabeth returned from her junket, Phillip took her outside, informing her she was now the Queen.

Elizabeth, it was said, took the news calmly and asked what plans needed to made for her return to her country.
