Although the California gold rush, after the discovery of gold at Sutter's mill in 1848, has been the most publicized gold rush, the first documented discovery of gold in the US occurred in 1799 in NC .

A young 12 yr old boy named Conrad Reed discovered a 17 pound nugget while fishing on the farm of his father, John Reed. Not knowing what he had found, the nugget was used for a door stop. Three years later, in 1802, John took the nugget to a jeweler, who paid him $3.50 for it, although it was worth about a thousand times more.

After discovering the error of his ways, Reed along with three trusted friends and two slaves, began searching for gold on his property. It is reported that one of the slaves unearthed a 28 pound nugget, which triggered the first US gold rush.
