On the 1960 to 1962 Warner Brothers ABC U.S. TV detective series "Surfside Six", Troy Donahue was the teen heartthrob as well as the film actor and singer, who played Sandy Winfield on the show. He was the guy who became a very popular male sex symbol in the 1950s and 1960s. On "Surfside Six" Donahue starred with Van Williams, Lee Patterson, Diane McBain, and Margarita Sierra. They performed actions that revolved around solving criminal cases as Miami, Florida private detectives who had an agency located on a houseboat.

When Donahue was acting in the 1961 TV season of "Surfside Six", it is claimed that he received between 5,000 to 7,500 fan letters a week. He was seen as a popular, clever, and attractive personality. The next year (1963) critics, TV exhibitors, and fans voted him the 20th most popular star in America. Also at the same time as an actor and singer, he became very well known and idolized in the country of Japan.

After the show "Surfside Six" was officially canceled, Donahue joined the cast of another ABC detective series. For its last season in 1963, Donahue was on the TV show, "Hawaiian Eye". He played the role of a hotel social director, Philip Barton. He also helped the main characters solve criminal cases. The stars of this show were Robert Conrad and Connie Stevens; they ran a combination high end detective agency and private security firm, located in Honolulu, Hawaii.
