Born to a prominent political family from Virginia, William Henry Harrison, capitalized on his military experience during his presidential campaign, with John Tyler as his running mate. Harrison's most significant battle was the Battle of Tippecanoe against Tecumseh's Native American Confederacy.,

Harrison and his force were camped near the Confederation's main settlement, Prophetstown in November 1811. Tecumseh, away on a recruiting mission to strengthen his force, was absent. Arrangements were made for Harrison and Tenskwatawa, Tecumseh's brother, to parlay the next day. Tenskwatawa, was a spiritual prophet not a military leader. Furthermore the Native Americans were outnumbered. Nevertheless they attacked the American camp the next morning. After being beaten back and retreating, The Native force abandoned Prophetstown, which the Americans promptly destroyed.

Tecumseh was killed in 1813, fighting against the Americans under William Henry Harrison during the Battle of the Thames during the War of 1812. Harrison died one month after becoming president on April 4, 1841.
