Sugar Ray Robinson (born Walker Smith Jr.; May 3, 1921 – April 12, 1989) was an American professional boxer. Robinson's performances in the welterweight and middleweight divisions prompted sportswriters to create "pound for pound" rankings, where they compared fighters regardless of weight. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

Robinson turned professional in 1940 at the age of 19 and by 1951 had a professional record of 128–1–2 with 84 knockouts. Robinson's first and only defeat in that period was to Jake LaMotta in a 10-round match. Giacobbe "Jake" LaMotta (born July 10, 1921) is an American retired professional boxer, former World Middleweight Champion, and stand-up comedian. Nicknamed "The Bronx Bull" and "The Raging Bull". LaMotta fought Robinson six times winning only once in there second fight. It took place February 5, 1943, at Olympia Stadium, in Detroit, Michigan. LaMotta, who had a 16 lb (7.3 kg) weight advantage over Robinson, knocked Robinson out of the ring in the eighth round. Robinson was saved by the bell at the count of nine. LaMotta, who was already leading on the scorecards before knocking Robinson out of the ring, pummeled and outpointed him for the rest of the fight. Robinson had trouble keeping LaMotta at bay. LaMotta won via unanimous decision, giving Robinson the first defeat of his career.
