One Direction (commonly abbreviated as 1D) are an English-Irish pop boy band based in London, composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and previously, Zayn Malik until his departure from the band on 25 March 2015. The group signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after forming and finishing third in the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor in 2010.

Up All Night was One Direction's debut studio album. The album bowed at number two on the UK Albums Chart and ultimately became the UK's fastest-selling debut album of 2011. Up All Night debuted to number one on the United States Billboard 200, selling 176,000 copies in its first week. This made them the first British band to have a debut album enter American albums chart in the top spot.

The bands awards include six Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, eleven MTV Europe Music Awards, seven American Music Awards (including Artist of the Year in 2014 and 2015), and 27 Teen Choice Awards, among many others.

As a Brit I feel ashamed that this 'Band' have been placed above the likes of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies and many more. While 1D can hold a tune and do a sort of dance, they would be way down in my list of favourite bands.

Since the Kinks are the oldest band listed, I went with them although I couldn't remember them scoring a #1.

took 2 away, and guess the "right answer", but know this was NOT the real answer as there are bands/groups out before i was born. few here have listed them, from the 60s and 70s, poss even the 50s... guess whatever puts out these so called question and answers is from/made in the 80s and so anything before the 2000s does not count ???
