After Major became Prime Minister it was misreported that his failure to get a job as a bus conductor resulted from his failing to pass a maths test. He had in fact passed all of the necessary tests but had been passed over owing to his height. He was 6 ft tall and too tall to be a bus conductor.

Sir John Major (born 29 March 1943) is a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1997. A cabinet minister from 1987, he served Margaret Thatcher in the Treasury and Foreign Office during her third ministry. Major was Member of Parliament (MP) for Huntingdon from 1979 to 2001. He is currently the oldest living former Prime Minister, following the death of Thatcher on 8 April 2013.
