Which city hosted the 1968 Summer Olympics?

The 1968 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event held in Mexico City, Mexico, in October 1968.

These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country. They were also the first Games to use an all-weather (smooth) track for track and field events instead of the traditional cinder track.

The 1968 Games were the third to be held in the last quarter of the year, after the 1956 Games in Melbourne and the 1964 Games in Tokyo. The Mexican Student Movement of 1968 happened concurrently and the Olympic Games were correlated to the government's repression.

I somehow remembered this without looking at the options. In 1968 I was a teenager living in a bedsit and we had a TV lounge. I remember watching it until 2am each night and then trying to get some sleep before starting work a few hours later!

No problem remembering that one instantly. I was in the hospital at Maxwell AFB in Alabama watching the games when Bob Beamon took a chainsaw to the existing world record in the broad/long jump and set a new one in excess of 29 and a half feet that I thought would never be broken. It was years later but still no one has ever made it to 30 feet. 1968 was a watershed year in many respects. Think MLK. Think RFK.

I just remember seeing African Americans holding their fists up. Strange, to remember such a thing with all the glory of the Olympics. But that was fifty years ago and memories do fade.
