Although the number of countries in the world has been steadily increasing to today's count of 195, additions have come mainly from Africa with the creation of S. Sudan, Eritrea, and Namibia, and in Asia due to the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. into individual republics since 1990 alone. Africa has the most countries with 54, closely followed by Asia with 48 and Europe with 44. Not included in the 195 countries are Taiwan, Cook Islands, Niue, and various dependent territories around the world such as American Samoa because they are not deemed to be sovereign nations.
