Which country besides the United States has the most active nuclear reactors in the world?

The United States tops the list, with nearly 100 operational nuclear reactors, providing a total net electricity capacity of 98,708 megawatts. Next on the list is France, with 58 reactors, and Japan is in third place, though, as of August 11, 2015 only one reactor out of 43 is online. Worldwide, there are currently 449 operational nuclear reactors, with a further 56 new plants under construction.

Now, nuclear reactors operate in 31 countries. Most are in Europe, Northern America, East Asia, and South Asia. Only France, Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine use them specifically as a major source of electricity for the country.

garywjensen, The people from General Electric who sold these reactors to Japan and the Japanese who approved the purchase should have all been prosecuted and given life sentences for gross disregard of public safety.

Corey Taylor, The earthquake did not destroy the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, the ensuing tsunami is what caused the accident. The earthquake shut down the reactors as it was supposed to do. The tsunami disabled the emergency generators that would have provided power to control and operate the pumps necessary to cool the reactors. The insufficient cooling led to three nuclear meltdowns, hydrogen-air explosions, and the release of radioactive material. These reactors were built and sold by US companies. Te-tonic plates are everywhere, and there are earthquakes that happen most everywhere even in the USA. In the case of Fukushima, the generators should of been installed on higher ground.

Only 1 in 43 active reactors? Sounds like Japan is paying the price for its own arrogance. Most countries have better common sense than to build nuclear power plants when they lay entirely in an EARTHQUAKE zone!
