There was an advertising campaign for the fast food chain Burger King in 1985 and 1986. In the campaign, the television commercials featured the fictional character named Herb. He was described as someone who had never eaten a Burger King burger in his life. The ads called on fans to visit their local Burger King where they would receive prizes if they found him at the location.

In the end as things turned out, the Burger King ad campaign was a very big advertising disaster. The company's profits plummeted 40% in 1986 for putting its trust in a lame fictional character named Herb.

After much build-up, Burger King decided to reveal "Herb" during the 1986 Superbowl. He turned out to be the atypical portrait of a 1980s nerd. He had glasses, short black pants, and white socks. His hair was greased back on his head. At that point, a face had been put to the name, but it was far too late. Consumers had lost interest in the campaign; Herb was officially retired a couple of months after his formal debut. This campaign was called a very "dumb, cheesy and corny one" by critics!!
