Munich is the name of the German city that is associated with an unsuccessful 1938 agreement which tried to prevent World War II. In the years leading up to World War II, Britain and France underestimated just how determined Adolf Hitler was in his lust for conquest. The failure by Britain with Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement meant war was inevitable.

It is known that in September 1938 Neville Chamberlain flew to Germany and met Hitler at Godesberg, where he was dismayed to learn that Hitler had stiffened his demands. At that point, he wanted the Sudetenland to be occupied by the German army and Czechoslovaks evacuated from the area by September 28. Chamberlain agreed to submit Hitler's new proposal to the Czechoslovaks, who rejected it, as did the British cabinet and the French. The French in fact on September 24th ordered a partial mobilization; one day earlier the Czechoslovaks had ordered a general mobilization.

In a last-minute effort to avoid war, Chamberlain then proposed that a four-power conference be convened immediately to settle the dispute. Hitler agreed, and on September 29, Hitler, Chamberlain, Daladier, and Italian dictator Benito Mussolini met in Munich. Mussolini introduced a written plan that was accepted by all as the Munich Agreement. This agreement allowed the German army was to occupy the Sudetenland. Because Britain and France would not help to resist Germany, the Czechoslovak government chose to submit to the agreement.
