Iancompat, Yes - one definition includes places which have a prison or a cathedral as cities, e.g. tiny St, Davids in Pembrokeshire.

Janet Moore, Quite correct. I viewed this as a trick question. Ideally it should be Greater London. The City of London has only a few thousand people

You need to check out what "City" means in UK! Unlike America where every town with a population over 3 is called a "City", in UK there are only 69 "Cities" total !

Dennis Sharp, "to be a city there has to be a cathedral in it." That was the traditional criterion. Apply that today and you will be ruling out massive settlements in Chiba etc..

The UK has a population of approximately 66 million as of 2017.
To call it "one of the world's most populated countries" is funny. In global ranking, it is #21. Its population hardly compares to China and India whose populations figure in billions! The US is #3 with a mere 328 million. The population of California alone is 39.54 million as of 2017, meaning if it were a country, it would rank #35!
