Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is soccer's global governing body. Founded on May 21,1904, it has since expanded to include 209 member associations.

The FIFA World Cup tournament has been held every four years since 1930. It took a major World War to suspend the tournament, 1942 and 1946. Even though World War 2 ended in 1945, the devastation in Europe was too great to hold the tournament.

Brazil has won the competition a record 5 times and is the only team to have entered every tournament since 1930. Germany and Italy have won four world cups each, West Germany was by far the most consistent team, after 1950, as they not only won 4 world cups but also lost 4 world cup finals. The Netherlands is the only team to have appeared in the final three times and lost all three.
