Warren Suggs is correct in that the given reason is incorrect. In the 15th century French manufacturers assigned actual historical figures to each of the king cards. The King of hearts was modelled on Charles the Great, who had a moustache which was in the original drawing. Wooden blocks were used for printing the figures on the cards and fine details wore down over time which happened in the case of the King of Hearts' moustache and the axe he used to hold which was eventually (mid 1800s in England) redrawn as a sword.

The reason is incorrect. The Kh originally did have a mustache. Copying error eliminated it.

Actually king of hearts is the only without a mustache not. because of superior personal hygiene He originally had one, but it got lost in the reproduction of the original design. A similar mistake caused his axe to become a sword

Given not all card manufacturers use the traditional artwork, I've seen the KoH with a mo - but I went with what I recalled of the "standard" artwork that I see most commonly.
