Maryland is the only U.S. state to have an Italian state motto. Its specific motto is Fatti maschii parole femine (Strong Deeds, Gentle Words). This might sound like Latin, but it is in fact Italian. Maryland is the only state to have a motto in that language (and in an antiquated orthography too).

This saying has been the motto of the Calvert family (the Barons Baltimore) who first founded the Colony of Maryland. The First Baron Baltimore, George Calvert, made the saying his family's motto in 1622, and it appears that the saying was well known in 17th century England.

At first, Calvert took an interest in the British colonization of the North America for commercial reasons. Then, later in time, his interest was to create a refuge for English Catholics.
