Canadian jockey Ron Turcotte rode the superhorse Secretariat to the first Triple Crown in 25 years in 1973. The duo capped the feat with an incredible 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes with a time of 2 minutes, 24 seconds which was 2.6 seconds faster than the previous record. Secretariat's Belmont record still stands as of June 2018.

The Triple Crown made an international star out of Turcotte, who was North America's leading stakes-winning jockey in 1972 and 1973. He was also the first jockey to win five out of six consecutive Triple Crown races (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont.)

Turcotte's career ended in 1978 following a tumble from his horse, Flag of Leyte Gulf, at the start of a race at Belmont Park. He suffered injuries that resulted in his being a paraplegic. Turcotte now makes appearances at racetracks to raise funds and awareness of the assistance that the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) provides to fellow injured riders.
