In 1850 the media mogul who started his career and publishing business by delivering news via carrier pigeon was Paul Julius Reuter. Reuter had worked at a book-publishing firm in Berlin and was involved in distributing radical pamphlets for the Year of Revolution, a series of political upheavals throughout Europe in 1848. These publications brought great attention to Reuter. Thereafter, he decided to develop a prototype structure for his news service using homing pigeons in 1850 in Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

In 1851, Reuter started to deliver news and stock prices to and from Berlin,Vienna, (via Berlin) and Paris primarily via telegraph lines that were then in existence or secondarily by carrier pigeons. Two newspapers, Kölnische Zeitung at the terminus of the railway line in Cologne and L’Independence Belge of Brussels, were probably the first subscribers to use the Reuters News Agency.
