Which mountain overlooks Cape Town, South Africa?

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park.

It is 1,086 metres (3,563 ft) above sea level, and about 19 metres (62 ft) higher than the cable station at the western end of the plateau.

The cliffs of the main plateau are split by Platteklip Gorge ("Flat Stone Gorge"), which provides an easy and direct ascent to the summit and was the route taken by António de Saldanha on the first recorded ascent of the mountain in 1503.

My daughter and her husband climbed to the top. It's really a hike, although not an easy one and the view is spectacular! They loved SA not only for it's beauty but for the food and wine.

To call Platteklip Gorge as "easy" is stretching the English language a bit. It is direct but involves an awful lot of scrambling over boulders and even experienced climbers can have problems with it - one fell a few years back and died. Climbing the Gorge by yourself is a potentially hazardous affair and I should know as I stupidly tried to climb down some 30 months ago by myself but sense then intervened and I stopped and went back up. Climbing down is more difficult than climbing up.

Indigenous Khoi people regarded Table Mountain as a sacred place. They were there centuries before European explorers. The name Camissa which means sweet waters is still in use.

Actually the correct native name is Hoerrikwagga. The dutch settlers named it Tafelberg
