In 1996, Godzilla received a "Lifetime Achievement Award" at the MTV Movie Awards.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was a tongue-in-cheek award for movie personalities who made an impact on popular culture. Prior to announcing the winner, MTV would air testimonials from major Hollywood celebrities praising the winners greatness while only offering a slight tease as to who the winner was.

Past winners of the award included Chewbacca and action star Jackie Chan.

Godzilla, a creation of Japan's Toho Studios in 1954, is as an enormous, destructive, prehistoric sea monster awakened and empowered by nuclear radiation. With the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Lucky Dragon 5 incident still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons. As the film series expanded, some stories took on less serious undertones, portraying Godzilla as an antihero, or a lesser threat who defends humanity.

Godzilla is one of the most recognizable symbols of Japanese pop culture world wide. In 2004, Godzilla received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that coincided with the 50th film to feature the character.

The character's pop cultural celebrity has spawned numerous parodies, cartoons, music and commercials. The animated "Bambie Meets Godzilla" was ranked No. 38 in the book "The 50 Greatest Cartoons." And, Godzilla was featured in a famous Nike ad where it lost a basketball game to NBA superstar Charles Barkley.
