The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has given seventy two Best Supporting Actor Academy Awards in the last 80 years. During this period of time, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Louis Gossett, Jr., and Morgan Freeman have won the award. They won for Jerry Maguire (1996), An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), and Million Dollar Baby (2004) respectively. The famous actor, Sidney Poitier, has never won an Oscar for being a Best Supporting Actor.

Nonetheless this legendary actor, filmmaker, and human-rights activist, Sidney Poitier, (1927) has obtained many movie accomplishments. He is in fact a two-time Academy Award winner. When he starred as Homer Smith in Lilies of the Field (1963), Poitier was recognized as a pre-eminent actor. This role earned him his first Oscar for Best Actor. Then late in his career after he had established himself both in front of and behind the camera, Poitier collected a bevy of honors, including a 2002 Honorary Lifetime Achievement Academy Award (Oscar).

It has been said by both friends and critics, "Sidney Poitier made a career out of defying standard movie expectations. He played his characters with dignity and realism."
