From the four names listed, the person who was not born in Memphis, Tennessee was Marion Barry Jr. (March 1936 – November 2014). He was born in rural Itta Bena, Mississippi, the third child of Mattie Cummings and Marion Barry. At the age of four, his his mother moved the family to Memphis, Tennessee. Employment opportunities were better for Mattie.

Later in his life after graduating from LeMoyne–Owen College, in Memphis in 1958, he worked hard as a civil rights activist. He next served three terms as mayor of Washington, District of Columbia. He survived a drug arrest and jail sentence, and then came back to win a fourth term as the chief executive of D.C. He died in 2014 on a Sunday at United Medical Center in Washington. He was 78. When his death was announced, it was stated that he died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease, with kidney disease and diabetes contributing.

Barry was called the "most influential and savvy local politician of his generation" in the newspapers. He dominated the D.C. political landscape in the final quarter of the 20th century. He was able to served for 15 years on the D.C. Council, whose Ward 8 seat he held until his death. Before his first stint on the council, he was president of the city’s old Board of Education. This was a time when his critics, in sarcasm but not entirely in jest, called him “Mayor for Life.” In the first dozen or so years of the new millennium, he was seen as a highly visible political player in Washington, D. C.
