The jaguar's range extends from the Southwestern United States and Mexico across much of Central America and south to Paraguay and Northern Argentina. It is the only extant member of the genus Panthera native to the Americas. The genus Panthera also includes lions, tigers and leopards.

The jaguar is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Near Threatened. It's numbers are declining. Although there are a few living in the US, it has largely been extirpated there. It has become locally extinct in El Salvador and Uruguay; however, it's still present in the Amazonian jungle.

Resembling the leopard, the Jaguar is heavier and sturdier. It's an apex predator and the largest cat species in the Americas. The Jaguar is crepuscular, active at dawn and dusk. It is largely solitary. The Jaguar, besides using the common methods of suffocation and deep throat bite of a Panthera, also employs uniquely the method of a skull bite to kill its prey which includes up to 87 different types of species. These species range from mice to black bears. The jaguar uses ambush rather than chase to catch its prey. Attacks on humans are rare but increasing due to human encroachment upon their habitat. Poaching, deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and hurricanes in its northern range have contributed to the jaguar's decline.
