The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), also known simply as "The G", is an Australian sports stadium located in Yarra Park, Melbourne, Victoria, and is home to the Melbourne Cricket Club. It is the 10th-largest stadium in the world, the largest in Australia, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, the largest cricket ground by capacity, and has the tallest light towers of any sporting venue.

Since it was built in 1853, the MCG has been in a state of almost constant renewal. It served as the centrepiece stadium of the 1956 Summer Olympics, the 2006 Commonwealth Games and two Cricket World Cups: 1992 and 2015.

Current capacities are: Melbourne Cricket Ground 100,024, Eden Gardens 66,000, Gaddafi Stadium 60,000, Lord's Cricket Ground 30,000 as of March 2016.

I've been in it multiple times and it is truly I incredibly large. One historical note, the MCG was used as the bivouac for the 1st Marine Division, the Old Breed, after the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Battle of Cape Gloucester in New Guinea. I know this as my Dad was in the 7Th of the 1st and fought at the "Canal", Cape Gloucester, Peililu and ended the war at Okinawa. As we were told, as children, he was only in 4 battles during the whole of WWII!!! 4 battles that changed the outcome of the war. Semper Fi and RIP, Dad.

It is very impressive, especially when you go to an AFL game and the crowd is over 90 thousand, love the atmosphere.

Great question and the stadium is very impressive, but as a true cricket fan, nothing bets Lords, as this hallowed ground is a must to visit!!

The G is local vernacular, Australians are known for shortening a word further that has already been shortened. It’s a great venue, but the local crowds have nowhere near the wit and boisterousness of the British crowds. If they mastered that, the Aussies would be unbeatable at the G ! Go Saints !!
