Charles "Lucky" Luciano, was instrumental in the development of the National Crime Syndicate established in May 1929 in the United States. He was a crime figure (gangster) who was never portrayed by Dustin Hoffman on either the big or small screen. Today Hoffman is known for his versatile portrayals of antiheroes, vulnerable, and notorious characters.

In the 2005 film The Lost City, which presents a fictionalized account of Meyer Lansky's involvement in Cuba, Hoffman portrayed Lansky as the "Mob's Accountant" who was clever, smart, and loyal to others on many different levels.

With the 1991 American gangster film, Billy Bathgate, directed by Robert Benton, Dustin Hoffman played the role of real life gangster Dutch Schultz. Hoffman's performance was called outstanding by several well known screen critics.
