Samuel L. Jackson is ranked as the highest all-time box office star with over $5.1 billion in total US box office gross, an average of $70.5 million per film.

Jackson was raised by a single mother and extended family in Chattanooga, Tennessee and attended college in Atlanta, switching his major from marine biology to theater.

In 1968, he was one of the ushers in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s funeral. The next year, he participated in a hostage taking incident, involving the trustees of Morehouse College, demanding reform in the school's curriculum and governance.

He was convicted of a second degree felony and suspended for two years, but did return to complete his degree.

Jackson became active in theater productions and did some television work. He moved to New York, and was mentored by Morgan Freeman. After a 1981 performance in the play 'A Soldier's Play', he was introduced to Spike Lee.

He became addicted to cocaine but successfully rehabbed and went on to work for notable directors, including Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino and George Lucas.

He is a highly prolific actor, having appeared in over 100 films, including 'Die Hard with a Vengeance', 'Unbreakable', 'Shaft', 'The 51st State', 'Snakes on a Plane', and the 'Star Wars' prequel trilogy, 'Goodfellas', 'Pulp Fiction', 'Jackie Brown', 'Django Unchained', and 'The Hateful Eight'.

He was nominated by the Academy Awards for his role in 'Pulp Fiction' and won the BAFTA award for that role.
