The first produced was A1 Sauce. The original sauce upon which A1 is based was created in 1824 by Henderson William Brand, a chef to King George IV of the United Kingdom. A popular myth has it that the king declared it "A1" and the name was born. It went into commercial production under the Brand & Co. label in 1831, marketed as a condiment for "fish, meat and fowl", and continued production under this label after bankruptcy forced ownership of Brand & Co. to be transferred to W.H. Withall in 1850. A1 was officially registered as a trademark in the U.S. in 1895, and imported and distributed in the United States by G.F. Heublein & Brothers in 1906.

When my dad ordered a steak in a restaurant, the "waitress" always asked if he wanted A-1 with his steak. My dad always said....."Why, is there something wrong with the steak?"

Gail Russell Gephart, I agree with your dad. A good steak does not need a powerful sauce to disguise its flavor.

Was hoping it was lea and Perrins sauce as the founders of the sauce Perrins paid for the building of beautiful church high up on the cliffs where I live in Barmouth Wales . The church is used for worship and for choral works as it's huge dimensions make for great accoustics . The building had to be delayed as it was actually carved into the mountainside and the bomb that they used for excavation proved too powerful and destroyed part of the building which had to be rebuilt. Princess Alice forth daughter of Queen Victoria was chosen to officially open it in the 1860s Unfortunately I've never heard of A1 sauce is it for sale in UK.?

I also chose the Worcestershire sauce as I knew it was early 1800s but I have never heard of A1 sauce. They were only 13 years apart.

HP sauce is so hard to find in the states. It is really good for lots of foods. It is now distributed by Lea & Perrins. Wish I could find some, use it in my home-made bar~be~que sauce. YUM!!!! ;-)
