In 1912, the Presidential election was a three party contest. President William Taft was the GOP, Woodrow Wilson was the Democrat, and Teddy Roosevelt ran as the Bull Moose party candidate. Roosevelt had already served two terms as president and this would have made him the first man ever to serve three terms. October 14, 1912, Roosevelt was preparing to give a speech in Milwaukee WI. John Schrank a Bavarian born tavern owner had been stalking Roosevelt, and shot him with a 38 caliber revolver. The speech that Roosevelt carried (folded) in his pocket slowed the bullet down, and his eye glass case deflected it just enough to be non-fatal. The bullet lodged against Roosevelt's rib cage but did not penetrate a lung. Roosevelt went on and gave a 90 minute speech before going to a hospital. Schrank was determined to be mentally ill, and he was convinced that Roosevelt gaining a third Presidential term would ruin the country.

Roosevelt did not win the election but he did come in second with Woodrow Wilson winning. The bullet was never removed but caused Roosevelt no significant problems the rest of his life. Schrank, who claimed the ghost of William McKinley had told him to assassinate Roosevelt, died in prison September 15, 1943.
