Formed by a group of four American expatriates in Paris in 1970, King Harvest was best known for its one US hit single, "Dancing in the Moonlight", which was released in 1972 and reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The band released other singles, but they were never able to match the success of "Dancing in the Moonlight". The track used a Wurlitzer electric piano throughout.

The song was written by keyboard player/songwriter Sherman Kelly in 1969 after a trip to the Caribbean island of Saint Croix, where he was attacked by natives and left for dead. While he was recovering from his injuries, he wrote this song. His brother, Wells Kelly – King Harvest's drummer in the early 1970s – introduced the song to the band.
