Oklahoma became the 46th State of the Union on November 16, 1907. The name of the state is derived from the Choctaw words "okla" and "humma" meaning "red people." It is commonly known as the "Sooner State" referring to the non-native settlers. Oklahoma is the 20th largest state in the United States. One of the Battleships destroyed by the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, was the USS Oklahoma.
