Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thereby becoming known as The First State on December 7, 1787.

Delaware is also called the Blue Hen State. Blue Hen is a variety of chicken that was adopted by the Delaware General Assembly on April 14, 1939 as the state bird.

Delaware is divided into 3 counties, the smallest number of counties of any state. From north to south, the three counties are New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. While the southern two counties are farming, New Castle County has been more industrialized.
