Famous actor Ewan McGregor and his good friend Charley Boorman organized a motorcycle ride from London to NY City. The two men on motorcycles, plus a camera man on a third bike left London and crossed Europe, then Asia, and then the U.S. After riding to the far east coast of Russia, the team was flown to Alaska, where they continued their trip to New York City. There was also a support crew driving 2 SUVs following the bikes. The journey which covered 19,000 miles started on 14 April 2004 and ended 29 July 2004.

The trip was called "Long Way Round" and it was broadcast on the Sky 1 TV Network in ten one hour segments.

BMW provided the motorcycles for product endorsements and most of the riding gear was obtained the same way.

The trip was also used to promote the humanitarian efforts of UNICEF. The crew made visits to orphanages along the way, including one that housed children from the Chernobyl disaster.

The series shows the gritty reality of trying to cross areas of the globe that are without even paved roads.

McGregor and Boorman went on to do a second documented trip called "Long Way Down" which went from Europe, down through Africa.
