Within the United States in 2014, the state of Oregon grew about 99 percent of the entire commercial crop of hazelnuts for the country. But, concerning the world's hazelnut production, Oregon only made up five percent of the production.

When looking at history, it is clear that the Oregon hazelnut industry has thrived for more than 100 years. The first hazelnut tree was planted in Oregon in 1858 by Sam Strickland. Today, it is seen as an industry that is expanding even further. Over 3,000 acres of new trees have been planted over the last few decades. So, there are roughly 45,000 acres of farmland currently in production. In Oregon there are more than 800 multi-generational family farms located throughout the Willamette Valley.
