In 1944, there were United States military troops stationed near Naples when Vesuvius erupted. Soldiers at the time were stationed at the Royal Palace of Caserta, near Naples, which was then the Allied Forces Headquarters in Italy.

This mountain is known for its two peaks, Vesuvius being the highest by about 200 feet or so, while the other ends abruptly in a jagged edge. This was the volcano which caused such devastation to Pompeii and the neighborhood in 79 AD. The whole thing is a perfect cone shape rising straight out of the great flat plain of Naples.

On the day Vesuvius erupted in 1944, it was reported that this was the worst eruption in over 200 years. Unfortunately, the area was rather misty on many days, and all people could see was the steam and smoke from lava, which by the fifth day, were almost down to the plain areas.

It was much better at night as people said that they could clearly see the lava being thrown high into the sky every few seconds, to fall back in a great cascade on the mass already moving down the mountain. People also said they could see in lower streams of lava the glow from burning trees and the face of the thirty-foot wall of lava advancing on the towns of San Sebastiano and Cercola.

Ultimately Vesuvius would cover hundreds of acres of valuable land which would never to be seen again. This was nature in action, and no one could do anything about it. The major explosion took place on March 18, 1944.
