This was one of many tragic events during the Second World War. On the 2nd of December, 1943, German bombers carried out an air attack on Allied forces in the Italian town of Bari. It was one of the most successful air raids by the German air force during the war. As a result of this attack, German Junkers Ju 88 bombers of Luftflotte 2 sent to the bottom 28 Italian, American, British, Norwegian and Polish transport and cargo ships. Other 12 ships were severely damaged while Germans lost only one bomber. The release of mustard gas from one of the wrecked cargo ships added to the loss of life.

This short attack, which claimed the lives of about 2 thousand people, was called the "Little Pearl Harbor".
