September was the 7th month in the Roman calendar: word septem from the Latin means "seven". Caligula (Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus) renamed the month Germanicus after his father Germanicus Caesar. Anyway, the new name lived for a very short time: after Caligula's assassination in 41 the month got his old name back.
