The Jazz Sound for the American TV show, "Peter Gunn" was composed by Henry Mancini in 1958. Today, the crime drama is best known for the driving jazz theme that won, for Henry Mancini, the very first 1958 Grammy ever awarded for Album of the Year (The Music from Peter Gunn).

Because the TV detective series was popular, the show also helped to catapult both Mancini and its creator producer, Blake Edwards, into major movie careers. Thirty two episodes of the series, which starred Craig Stevens, were released while the TV show ran from 1958 to 1961. In the end, the show won eight Emmy nominations in its first season, including chances for all four members of its cast; two for Edwards' script and direction on the pilot; Mancini, for his music; and the one for best dramatic series.

Edwards tried twice to revive the show. First, he tried in 1967 with a feature film starring Craig Stevens. Second, in 1989 an effort was made to again have the show on TV, starting with a television movie starring Peter Strauss. These efforts were not at all successful. But, the revised "Peter Gunn" was to be a music driven crime drama, dark and hip, with a beautiful setting that would appeal to young TV viewers.
