The only work by Bowie himself was Beautiful, Hallo, Space-boy Painting, an allusion to the astronaut character Major Tom, a recurring presence in Bowie’s songs. The painting, which he produced with Damien Hirst, sold for £785,000, in November 2016.

Damien Hirst was, in Bowie’s own words, his idea of a contemporary artist, being ‘…one of the people who has helped make art very accessible to the public in Britain in a way that had never happened before’ (David Bowie, quoted in Michael Kimmelman, Talking Art with/ David Bowie; A Musician’ Parallel Passion, The New York Times, 14th June 1998).

Much like Bowie himself, Hirst transgresses the norm and defies convention. The spin paintings in this collection embody the meeting of two cultural icons, icons who continue to provoke and inspire us. Bowie and Hirst have a close synergy, which was expressed through an interview in Modern Painters magazine and the collaboration on the spin painting: Beautiful, hallo, space-boy painting.
