Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968) was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree from Radcliffe College. She was born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, and her home, Ivy Green, is now a museum.

A man named Peter Fagan, a twenty-nine year old Boston Herald Reporter, was brought in to be Helen Keller’s private secretary when her teacher and friend, Anne Sullivan, suddenly became ill. Peter and Helen fell in love and had plans to elope, but Helen's family objected to the marriage.

Her family believed that women with a disability should not marry, and her families interference prevented the marriage. Anne Sullivan, her teacher, and most of society felt disabled people should not marry. Rose Sultan wrote, “Helen Keller in Love”, about Helen and Peter's love story.
