For an unprecedented career in horse racing, being a Champion Jockey for every season of his 20 year professional career and riding over 4,300 winners, Anthony Peter "AP" McCoy won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award for 2015. During his career, he obtained championships which include the Grand National, two Cheltenham Gold Cups, three Champion Hurdles, and the Champion Chase.

AP McCoy (born May 1974) was just 15 years old when he dared to leave home in Moneyglass, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He left his parents (Peadar and Claire McCoy) and his five siblings to grab an opportunity to pursue his dream of being a jockey. AP won his first official horse race in 1992 at age 17. He rode Jim Bolger in a flat race at Thurles race course in Ireland.

McCoy was able to claim his first Champion Jockey title in 1995/96. He then went on to win it every year until his retirement in 2015. He chose to retire at the top of his game. This made room for his nearest rival, Richard Johnson, to take the honor of Champion Jockey in 2016 and 2017.
