Mahatma Gandhi has never won the Nobel Peace Prize. Gandhi was nominated in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947, and, finally, a few days before his assassination in January 1948. The omission has been publicly regretted by later members of the Nobel Committee. Geir Lundestad, Secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in 2006 said, "The greatest omission in our 106-year history is undoubtedly that Mahatma Gandhi never received the Nobel Peace Prize."
Mikhail Gorbachev won the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize for the loosening of Soviet hegemony over Eastern Europe which helped end the Cold War. Yasser Arafat, together with Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize for the Oslo Accords. Former US Vice President Al Gore, jointly with the IPCC, won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for work in climate change activism.
