The BRITs Icon Award is only presented to unparalleled artists - whose writing, recording and performance set them apart as having made a lasting impact on the nation's culture, recognising the very highest level of British music achievement." The first BRITs Icon Award was given in 2013.

The only Brit Award that Freddie won was in 1992 when Mercury was posthumously awarded the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and had a tribute concert held at Wembley Stadium, London.

Only three people have received the BRITs Icon Award. Elton John was the first winner of the award in 2013. Since then David Bowie and Robbie Williams have been winners of the award.

Elton John has received five Brit Awards – winning two awards for Outstanding Contribution to Music and the first Brits Icon in 2013 for his "lasting impact on British culture", an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, a Disney Legends award, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004.

David Bowie was posthumously honoured with Brits Icon. His good friend and actor Gary Oldman accepted the award on Bowie's behalf on 24 February 2016.

Robbie Williams has received a record eighteen Brit Awards—winning Best British Male four times, and two awards for Outstanding Contribution to Music and the 2016 Brits Icon for his "lasting impact on British culture".
