The core 'Outlander' novel series is a sequence of novels written by Diana Gabaldon that feature elements of historical fiction and non-fiction, romance, adventure and science fiction time travel.

The Outlander series focuses on 20th century British Army nurse Claire Randall, who is traveling with her husband Frank on a second honeymoon to Inverness, Scotland after working apart during WWII. Frank, a history professor, conducts research into his family tree and Claire goes plant gathering near standing stones on the hill of Craigh na Dun. Hearing a buzzing noise in the stones, Claire faints. Upon waking, Claire finds adventure and romance with 18th century Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser.

As of 2017, eight books comprise the 'Outlander' series: *'Outlander' (1991), 'Dragonfly in Amber' (1992), 'Voyager' (1993), 'Drums of Autumn' (1996), 'The Fiery Cross' (2001), 'A Breath of Snow and Ashes' (2005), 'Echo in the Bone' (2009) and 'Written in My Heart's Own Blood' (2014). The ninth book in the series, 'Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone' is forthcoming. No publication date has been announced.
