Speke and Burton were on an expedition to find the source of the Nile. Speke took a solo side trip of 47 days and 452 miles to "discover" Lake Victoria, because Burton was too weak from an illness to accompany him. Because much of the expedition's survey equipment had been lost at this point and thus vital questions about the height and extent of the lake could not be answered easily, this caused contention between Burton, who believed Lake Tanganyika was the source of the Nile, and Speke, who argued for Lake Victoria, until they died.

While Speke and Burton were instrumental in bringing the source of the Nile to the wider world and were the first to record and map this section of Africa, the efforts and labors of Sidi Mubarak Bombay and Mabruki were instrumental in discovering the lake.
