The company which makes kikkoman soy sauce and other products conducts hideous experiments on animals, or they used to (not sure if they still do). Among other things, they cut them open and pour in the soy sauce and other products and do not treat them for pain or anything else.

Japanese introduce many things especially food and food products for many years. Kikkoman is one and the other is Yakult.

Kikko which means tortoise in Japanese ,a man meaning 10,000 were choosen first in the trademark for the mogis best soy sauce and later as a company name.

Keith Hodgson, according to Kikkoman's website, kikko means turtle shell or tortoise shell, man means 10,000; but they interpret it as the animals live for 10,000 years in Japanese legend, and thus symbolise happiness, success and longevity. All that you could want from a soy sauce ..... although the salt may be unhelpful in attaining one or more of these.

While Kikkoman do produce a very nice Soy sauce, Kikkoman has no meaning in Japanese and certainly not mean 10000 tortoise shells, not even loosely, yet another Quiz Club failed to check question!

Kath Thomson, You need to put in the Kanji (symbols) for Kikkoman in Japanese to English - Google Translate is not a native Japanese speaker! There are many ways of saying the same thing in Japanese, and there are 3 written systems for it; Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Hiragana are used to phonetically spell Japanese words, Katakana are used for foreign words. There are 46 basic sounds/symbols for both of the Hiragana and Katakana (plus 61 others each for combination characters for more sounds, making 107 symbols for both for a total of 214), and there are well over 50,000 Kanji, but you're considered literate if you know the most basic 2,000.
