Samuel Langhorne Clemens is an American author and newspaper man who used the pen name Mark Twain. Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). These novels as well as his short stories such as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" brought international attention. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Clemens was in great demand as a speaker. He made solo humorous talks, similar to stand-up comedy. He was noted for his "tall tales". Clemens was interested in science and mechanics. He invented a type-setting machine but lost much when it became obsolete.

Clemens was married to Olivia Langdon for 34 years. They had 3 daughters and one son. He died of a heart attack on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut, having lived 74 years.
